Odds And Ends

IS CASTIGATING OUR BELOVED DR. GORDON CANNON, APPARENTLY ...

FOR AN ALLEGED FAILURE ...

TO BE VIBRANT ENOUGH IN HERE ...

And so ...

Posted by Mr. Pants: Its unfortunate that this website is no longer a fun and vibrant exchange of ideas among people who are passionate about politics.

Instead, one person sits and his computer all day long and posts comment after comment.

Faith and Politics: Rules of the Game

Even if we wanted to keep the two absolutely separate, we'd be fighting a losing battle. Religion has always been deeply embedded in U.S. politics, for better and for worse. How could it be otherwise? You can't ask people to leave their personal values out of their political choices. And in a country so massively saturated with religion, you can't ask people to leave their faith out of their personal values. So religion will be in politics whether we like it or not.

Given that the faith-politics mix is inevitable, and sometimes a force for progressive change, why do so many progressives demand "Religion out of politics!"? The answer we always hear is, "They're trying to impose their religion on me."

But what exactly does that mean? Was Dr. King trying to impose his religion upon the southern racists when he demanded integration because blacks, too, are "children of God"? More recently, progressive faith-based coalitions have won living wage campaigns.

Semi-finals beckon Abbotts Ann

VERNHAM Dean had to show strong resolve to return from a two-goal deficit in the last 20 minutes of their second encounter with title-chasing Southampton Arms Reserves.

In a strong wind, Arms led by a goal at the break and doubled their lead shortly afterwards, but a good passing move by Vernham manager Gary Powley and Dave Davies led to Mark Gibbs scoring his second goal in as many games before Vernham keeper Gavin Davies drew the two sides level with a penalty.

Entertainer 5 Twinings/Foresters 2.

ENTERTAINER continued their unbeaten run after a hard-fought battle.

The first half was scrappy and it wasn't until five minutes into the second half that Rob Burroughs earned a penalty which was converted by Cookie Nixon. Twinings' hard work paid off and they equalised straight away but Chris Knight soon changed the game with two goals.

Euro Still Near High, Dollar Sinks Vs Swiss Franc, Yen

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--The euro jumped to a new historic high Thursday morning on hawkish commentary from European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet. The euro soared to $1.5373, but U.S. stocks have since opened in the negative. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was recently down more than 100 points. That shot to risk appetite typically eats away at some of the gains in the higher-yielding, riskier currencies, such as the euro. The dollar also declined against the lower-yielding yen to an intraday low of Y103.05 and against the Swiss franc to a historic low of CHF1.0275. Early Thursday in New York, the euro was at $1.5349 from $1.5264 late Wednesday. The dollar was at Y103.12 from Y103.96. The euro was at Y158.26 from Y158.65, according to EBS. The U.K. pound was at $2.0069 from $1.9915, and the dollar was at CHF1.0288 from CHF1.0362 late Wednesday.

A primer for viewing the Democratic debate

I don't think he is ready yet. He is a great motivational speaker. But his idea of "bringing everyone together" to solve the problems of the US is naive at best.

I don't think he's going to talk Haliburton into returning the billions of dollars of our tax money for services and products they have not delivered to our troops and I can just picture the executives of Exxon sitting down and agreeing to return some of the profits they have raked in from price gouging under this administration. Ain't gonna happen. Rather we need regulation, accountability and enforcement of the laws on the books that govern these businesses. We need someone who will demand that they are honest and fair when dealing with their customers.

Talk is cheap, action speaks. America has a short collective attention span and our "rock star" candidate only contributes to the problem.

ClayNation: The tao of Applebee's football

Watching a football game at the Applebee's bar is sort of like playing secondary for the Tennessee defense. You know you're going to get burned, you're just not sure how. Several people have written in wanting to know where I was during the second half of South Carolina-UT and why I haven't commented on that game. For the record, I was at Applebee's.

The reason I haven't written anything about this was twofold: Because it was so painful to describe and because I'd already written 3k words on the Cocktail Party that same day. So I've decided to go back in time and tell you why you never, under any circumstances, want to watch a football game at Applebee's. Not that you needed to hear this from me but even still, a truer statement has never been made in this column. So here we go with my evening at Applebee's.

The Richardson File: The Santa Fe New Mexican follows the governor's ...

In recent months, Gov. Bill Richardson has staked out the most dovish position on the Iraq war of all Democratic presidential candidates this side of Dennis Kucinich.

"Leave no troops behind," Richardson says. Withdraw all troops within a year, leaving no residual troops in the country. In stump speeches, debate appearances and campaign ads, Richardson repeatedly points out that none of the front-runners are calling for complete withdrawal.

But he didn’t always feel that way about the war.

As recently as November 2005, when his autobiography, Between Worlds, was published, Richardson supported the war. He criticized the administration’s handling of the occupation following the collapse of Saddam Hussein’s government, but said, "At this point, however, we must see this mission through.
