Lawsuits hold up Parkdale Wal-Mart

Three pending lawsuits are the latest snags to face Wal-Mart officials planning to build a Supercenter at Parkdale Plaza.

The lawsuits, filed in the 148th District Court by Parkdale Plaza owners and Sutherlands, seek clarifications on the lease agreement between Parkdale Plaza's owners and Sutherlands. The Supercenter was supposed to have a grand opening early this year.

Among primary issues are Sutherlands pitted parking lot and an agreement not to allow a direct competitor into Parkdale Plaza, attorneys said.

Sutherlands officials say their lease prevents the landlord from allowing another prospective tenant to be "permitted to sell building materials and/or home improvement supplies and services."

Sutherlands attorney Jim Robichaux of Corpus Christi said the lease needs to be clearly defined and Wal-Mart needs to show its proposed business model and how that would not affect Sutherlands' business and lease.

Romney a class act

With Mittens gone, there is really no threat from McCains right flank. He could very easily take the stage at CPAC later today and tell the wingnuts to go pound sand, tell em take it or leave it because this is what you got as an alternative to the Dems. Show some real independence from the extremist wing of the GOP.

This would be a real maverick move, and one that would really take some wind out of the Dem sails for the fall. Hillary in particular would have much of the centrist raison detre torn from under her feet.

But, cynic that I am (and of a more advanced grade than Kindergarten, Glenn!!), I fully expect St John to suck up to the fundies and wingnuts at CPAC and beg to be forgiven his sins. Because I think the man is full of cr@p and has no real principles to stand on, and he will pander just as surely as the sun rises in the east.

Microsoft Researcher Jim Gray Receives Turing Award for Helping to ...

"The original question, 'Can machines think?' I believe to be too meaningless to deserve discussion. Nevertheless, I believe that at the end of the century the use of words and general educated opinion will have altered so much that one will be able to speak of machines thinking without expecting to be contradicted." Alan M. Turing, 1950

SAN FRANCISCO, May 14, 1999 — Fifty years ago, British mathematician Alan M. Turing predicted that by the turn of the century, computers would be able to "think." To measure this, he devised a simple test. Put a person and a computer in one room, and a judge in another, and have the judge ask the computer and the person questions using only a keyboard. If 30 percent of the time the judge can't tell the difference between human and computer, the machine must be somewhat intelligent.

Pacific Gas and Electric Company Partners With U.S. GSA to Offer Major ...

This is the equivalent of powering more than 400 households, or taking more than 200 cars off the road for a year. Design aspects of the San Francisco building include a natural ventilation system with operable windows that dramatically reduces energy consumption. The use of natural ventilation eliminates the need of mechanical ventilation in more than 70% of the tower's area. This 18-story structure uses about 30% less energy than traditional high-rise buildings. Both buildings are designed to conserve natural resources, take advantage of the equable climate, minimize waste, and create a healthy and productive work environment for all its tenants.

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) is a centralized federal procurement, property development and management, and policy agency created by Congress to improve government efficiency and assist federal agencies to better serve the public.

Rental Cars Won't Need Transponders to Travel Through Sunpass Lanes

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Sept. 27 -- Many rental car customers traveling on Florida's toll roads and bridges are now able to utilize 'SunPass Only' lanes to pay their tolls, even without a SunPass transponder, thanks to a pair of innovative programs announced by Turnpike officials this week.

Rental car customers in Central Florida also can use the EPass lanes on toll roads operated by the Orlando- Orange County Expressway Authority (OOCEA), and will soon be able to use the LeeWay toll lanes in Lee County.

Florida's Turnpike Enterprise has entered into contractual agreements with American Traffic Solutions and Rent A Toll, Ltd. to administer a program which utilizes license plate information to identify rental vehicles and electronically collect the toll.

American Traffic Solutions is currently offering its PlatePass(R) cashless toll payment service to rental car customers using vehicles rented from Avis, Budget, and Hertz.
