Philly CarShare becomes well-traveled

You've seen them everywhere. In prime parking territory on Center City streets, in Ikea parking lots, at the Wegman's in Cherry Hill. Hybrids, Mini Coopers, trucks emblazoned Philly CarShare. "Our wheels. Your freedom."

Where do they come from?

Go back to March 2002. Five people meet in the lobby of the Doubletree Hotel in Philadelphia.

Tanya Seaman, 35 and Clayton Lane, 26, both city planners; Larry Shaeffer, a community activist; Eli Massar, who works for the Mural Arts Project; and Nate Robinson, an investment banker.

They are planning a kind of communal rental system for Philadelphia that will allow a single car to be used by multiple drivers every day. People who need the keys for just a couple of hours to get to a child's baseball game or meet a client for lunch or haul home a new microwave.

250 watch Healy, Creighton trade jabs in fourth mayoral debate

CANTON Janet Weir Creighton and William J. Healy II might have been friends four years ago, but they certainly don't seem to be friends now. The two mayoral candidates took jabs at each other Sunday night during a debate sponsored by the Temple Israel Brotherhood and News-Talk 1480 WHBC radio. About 250 people attended the program, which was carried live on WHBC. It was the fourth debate between Creighton, a Republican seeking her second term as mayor, and Healy, a Democrat serving his second term in the Ohio House. Sunday's debate came on the heels of reports that Healy offered to help Creighton in her 2003 campaign when she beat Canton City Councilman Bill Smuckler by 371 votes to become mayor. Copies of e-mails from Healy show he offered to record phone messages urging people to vote for Creighton.

A Mafia mix-up Former Sparta councilman held in Italy, suspected as ...

Richard E. Hunsicker felt helpless as he followed Sicilian police officers up four flights of stairs in the coastal city of Mazara del Vallo last month.

The 81-year-old from Florida had just sat down for dinner at La Bettola Ristorante with his fiancé Mary Dwyer on Oct. 10 when they were surrounded by five men.

They said something in Italian about going down to "control," according to Hunsicker, a former Sparta resident.

"I said, 'No, I'm not going down," he recalled. "I've heard stories about people (in Sicily) who pretend to be police and they take you outside and rob you."

Uniformed officers convinced the couple to go with them to headquarters.

"They never told us why they took us in," Hunsicker said. "We had a difficult time, because of the language."

La polizia told Hunsicker they had received a tip-off from Palermo, the last place he and Dwyer had visited.

Sharm, on the other hand, was where the better coiffed set hung out. Dahab was a place you traveled to by bus; Sharm had the airport. You went to Dahab to smoke up; down in Sharm, they sipped Chivas.

Hammada El-Tawil owns a dive center on El-Fanaar Street in Dahab. He came here 20 years ago when it was a palm-lined beach with a few huts and a makeshift bar-cum-restaurant called the Hard Rock Café. Intending to stay for a week, Hammada ended up trading in the Honda 750 he rode for a half share in the Hard Rock. He stayed on, serving up omelets and beer on the beach, for nine months.

Things, however, have changed since those days.

“The place was clean and people were clean,” he says. “They came for the nature, for the air and the sea; things are different now. There’s lots of cheating now.

Frank’s part of local folklore
