Blog Day Afternoon: Looking for something?

Since I'm looking for a bed, asap, being that I've slept an average of four hours a night over the last two-plus weeks, I'm getting straight to the good stuff. And by good stuff I mean Tylenol PM -- and your blogs.

On to the best blogs ... around!

Firm to transform Glendale Airport into employment hub

The developers who brought Glendale Cabela's and the larger Zanjero project near University of Phoenix Stadium are now tackling improvements to Glendale Municipal Airport. The facility, about a 5-minute drive west of the stadium off Glendale Avenue, has largely been a private pilots' airport with numerous single-engine aircraft. Phoenix-based Rightpath Limited Development Group is upgrading amenities to cater to corporate jet traffic. Many of the changes should be ready to go by Super Bowl XLII in February. .

Did I really hear this....

A spokeswoman for Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, who has authority over FEMA, called the incident "inexcusable and offensive to the secretary."
I personally find Michael Chertoff inefficient, inexcusable and offensive for his inaction and utter incompetence during and after the Hurricane Katrina crisis in 2005 not to mention his continuing attempts to impersonate a professional in charge of rendering assistance in the time of disasters. Who gave the order for FEMA personnel to impersonate news journalists? Is it plausible that FEMA will be sending formaldehyde-laden trailers to Southern California to house the homeless?

FEMA is reviewing its press procedures and will make changes to ensure they are "straightforward and transparent," Johnson said on Friday.

Veterans' suicide toll dwarfs deaths

MORE US military veterans had killed themselves in one year than the number of American soldiers who have died in Iraq since 2003, it was claimed yesterday.

At least 6256 US veterans took their own lives in 2005, at an average of 17 a day, according to figures broadcast last night. Former servicemen are more than twice as likely than the rest of the population to commit suicide.

Such statistics compare to the total 3863 US military deaths in Iraq since the invasion in 2003 -- an average of 2.4 a day, according to the website icasualties.org.

The figures came as the US backed down on its policy of forcing diplomatic staff to serve in Iraq. Three foreign service officers who signed up for the last of the 48 vacancies had won tentative approval, officials said.

I'm writing today's review on the bad side of a rough New Year's Eve. However, I am not going to let the occasional irritated rumblings from my stomach deter me from my duties. I only wish today, of all days, I didn't have to write about . . . gulp . . . eggs. .

2008 new-car preview: The ones to watch

Redesigned versions of the Honda Accord and Chevrolet Malibu aim squarely at the Toyota Camry, the most popular passenger car in the U.S., and Focus is revamped to rekindle interest in what has become Ford's best-selling car largely by default.

For Chrysler, the big news is the redesigned Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans, and General Motors gets its first full-fledged hybrids, which it turns out the industry's first truck-based hybrids.
