Sports Columnists

This is a very significant time for us," he said. "This is when you start sending the right messages, not just to people in the organization, but to the support staff, personnel staff and most importantly to the players. You're telling everybody, 'This is what we're doing.' The tone and the culture are established here. You can't be flippant. The decisions can't be emotionally driven."

No. Let's leave that to DeAngelo Hall.

It's unfortunate when an athlete's talent comes with so little forethought or leadership. Hall, despite having a pretty good season amid the Falcons' collapse last year, flashed his shortcomings often last season. He said the wrong things at the wrong time instead of doing what a veteran should do to hold a fractured team together. When others talked about ways to turn things around, Hall asked for a new contract.

Australian market shows encouraging resilience

WE are caught between the US slashing interest rates and our Reserve Bank putting them up.

And it's against the backdrop of an Australian broker failing to settle trades for the first time since the Australian Stock Exchange switched to computers almost 20 years ago. For almost five hours last Tuesday, hundreds of millions of dollars of share trades were frozen in limbo.

Throw in that $8 billion forex loss by giant French bank Societe Generale, another multi-billion dollar sub-prime write-off by Switzerland's biggest bank, UBS, and it all adds up to disturbing confusion and complexity.

Certainly, we are living in "interesting times".

Are they about to turn interestingly nasty? For investors? For jobs? For your standard of living?

In fact, the local outcome from all of this is encouraging resilience.

County commissioners to debate road money versus Tri-Rail aid

County commissioners are set to debate today whether to back state legislation that would take money away from high-priority county road projects and give it to just-as-important mass transit programs and Tri-Rail.

Florida Department of Transportation officials say the shift would deplete funding for several local road projects, like an overpass in Riviera Beach and other major construction meant to help cruise-ship passengers entering the Port of Palm Beach, as well as an expansion project to help motorists on State Road 7 in Palm Beach County.

Other projects that could be delayed are scheduled improvements for State Road 811 from the Broward County line to Southwest 18th Street in south Palm Beach County, as well U.S. 1 expansions from south of Glades Road to north of Yamato Road.

Drive for new fuel tax

Every time motorists filled up at a service station, there would be awareness of the carbon tax, encouraging motorists to think about driving less, taking public transport or buying a smaller car when possible," Caltex spokesman Frank Topham said.

The Rudd Government ruled out a carbon tax.

"The Australian Government does not support the use of a carbon tax," said a spokeswoman for Climate Change Minister Penny Wong.

But other oil giants admitted drivers would still be hit at the bowser when emissions trading started in 2010.

BP Australia said emissions trading was preferable to a direct carbon tax, but consumers would see a price rise either way.

Spokesman Chandran Vigneswaran said the fuel industry would not be alone in passing on the cost of the emissions trading scheme.

First-ever Richard Wright tour to ramble through area Feb. 23

A Force for Right," and Charles Wright presents remarks about the tour.

At about 1:45 p.m., those with tickets will board motor coaches for a tour that goes first to Forks of the Road, an area near the divergence of Liberty Road and St. Catherine Street. In the mid-1800s, a portion of Forks of the Road contained the second- largest slave market in the South.

“Forks of the Road shows up a lot in my family history," Wright said. “My great-grandfather, Nathaniel Wright, was a slave on Rucker Plantation, near Cranfield. In 1863, he ran away and joined the U.S. Army at Forks of the Road."

After the Civil War, Wright returned to Rucker Plantation, married and raised seven children, including Richard Wright's father, Nathan Wright, and Charles Wright's grandfather, Uriah “Rias" Wright.

Practitioners of tourism industry urged to charge fair rates

Accra, Feb. 5, GNA - The Ghana Tourism Society (GTS) has appealed to stakeholders in the tourism industry, especially private companies that have enjoyed tax rebates and exemptions to ensure that their prices and rates were commensurate to their services. The Society said all those who had enjoyed tax exemptions and duty-free incentives from the Ghana Investments Promotions Council (GIPC) should ensure that they kept their prices low and competitive to encourage more tourists into the country. Mr Ernest W. Owusu, President of the Ghana Tourism Society, in a release copied to the GNA Sports, said the gesture would go a long way in boosting the nation's tourism sector especially following the presence of a large number of visitors and football fans for the Ghana 2008 soccer tournament. He reminded all private entrepreneurs, corporate bodies and service providers, including hotels and car rental companies, tour operators and entertainment centres in the hospitality industry that the exemptions was to ensure that Ghana became competitive and affordable leisure holiday destination.
