On, say, the night of January 23rd or the night of August 12th, witches, ghosts, and goblins are imaginary beings which only lurk, if at all, in the minds of men and women. But on the night of October 31, All Hallow's Eve, or Halloween as it is now called, these creatures come to life. They are, for at least this one night, very much real. On this night, anything is possible.

Over the years the meaning of Halloween, the power of Halloween, has become lost inside of bags of candy and behind plastic masks. The real Halloween lies dormant, hidden beneath the fallen leaves, waiting to surface.

In the past this night received more respect. To our predecessors this eve held more significance. On this night the Druids believed that Saman, the lord of the dead, called his servants to rise from their graves and haunt the earth.

INDIANS (3-4-1) 11, ASTROS (3-6) 5 Turning point

After scoring once off Houston starter Woody Williams in the opening inning, Cleveland jumped on the veteran right-hander for four more in the third — two coming on a double from Ben Francisco and two more on a single from Josh Barfield — to open up a 5-0 lead.

Hits

A day after being held to one hit, the Indians amassed 19 against the Astros — seven through the first three innings — with eight of the extra-base variety. - C.C. Sabathia's second exhibition start was much better than his first, with the left-hander tossing three perfect innings and striking out three.

Fire affects fuel routes

While any disruption in supply might have some impact on prices, Newton said the larger factor is the sudden surge in crude oil prices. Oil futures shot above $100 per barrel Tuesday before finishing the trading day a few cents under that mark.

While some analysts mentioned the Alon explosion as a minor factor in the price hike, most attributed it to concern that members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries will vote to cut the cartel's oil production in March.

Newton pointed out that gasoline distributors have arrangements among themselves to allow trading and switching of supplies in order to ensure markets are adequately supplied. He said gasoline can be trucked in from other points to make up for the stoppage in Big Spring.

All but one of the four workers hurt in Monday's explosion were released from the hospital Monday.

The Debates: A Preview of the Campaign Ahead

We really do need a better schedule of presidential primaries, one that tests the candidates over time, not in just a series of uncoordinated jump starts that could settle both parties' nominations almost a year before their nominating conventions.

A staggered system of regional primaries would be a big improvement; so would a system that lets smaller states go first, followed by the larger prizes later. With a schedule of primaries like this year's, there may be time for the candidates to strategize, but not to think. The current hodgepodge of primaries prompts people to pick a candidate to root for (Americans love sporting events) but it leaves people little time to ponder their choice.

There's no fixing the system in time for this election year, but at least this past week's debates, after so many face-offs that had too many candidates and not enough substance, did tell voters what each party was about at this fluid moment of American history.

GM, Chrysler post double-digit sales dips for February; Ford and ...

General Motors Corp. Chrysler LLC, Ford Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. today said their U.S. sales declined in February, while American Honda Motor Co. Inc. recorded a 5 percent gain.

Chrysler and GM each posted double-digit declines -- in part, GM said, due to a tough comparison with a strong month last February.

Chrysler reported sales of 150,093 units in the month, down 14 percent from 174,506 a year ago, despite positive demand for models such as the Dodge Caliber, Dodge Avenger and redesigned Jeep Patriot.

Environmental groups critical of proposed power plant

So far, more than 700 people and organizations have sent comments, said Adam Myrick, media relations specialist for the state Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Santee Cooper wants to build two 600-megawatt generators near the banks of the Little Pee Dee River. The Pee Dee Energy Campus would be capable of powering 600,000 homes. Santee Cooper says if it doesn't build the plant, it will run short of power by 2013, possibly triggering brownouts and blackouts on peak energy days.

Santee Cooper's plan has drawn strong support from the state's manufacturing base, with representatives from factories and smelters saying their plants might become less viable without inexpensive and dependable power.

The plant also has generated vigorous opposition from conservation and citizens' groups, with doctors in Florence protesting recently outside DHEC's offices.

Aussie's snowball charges dropped

BRECKENRIDGE, Colorado: US prosecutors have dropped assault and harassment charges against an Australian man who threw a snowball at a ski resort co-worker.

It was in "the best interest of justice" to dismiss the case against 21-year-old Andrew Thistleton, prosecutors said. Mr Thistleton said he was overjoyed at the outcome. "It's been a long time but you know all's well that ends well and I'm just happy that it's finished and it's over after all this time," he told the Seven Network from Colorado. Mr Thistleton, a Sydney University and former Scots College student, was scheduled to go on trial today for a second time. His first trial ended in a mistrial last week. Authorities said Mr Thistleton hit Michelle Oehlert on the back with the snowball last February when both were working at a Copper Mountain ski resort rental shop.
